Why Are My Brakes Grinding?

Ford Service - Brakes

Nothing is worse than hearing your vehicle make sounds it shouldn’t as you’re driving about Jackson. And unfortunately, hearing your brakes making a grinding noise is not good news. This sound is a sign that your vehicle is due for maintenance as soon as possible. So if you’re a Hartford driver wondering, “Why are my brakes making a grinding noise and how can I make it stop?”, we have all the information you need to know below.

As with most maintenance on your vehicle, putting off this issue can lead to accidents and put your safety in jeopardy, as well as the safety of your passengers as well. In fact, the National Highway Safety Administration has found that faulty brakes could be a factor in as many as 25% of all road accidents. So, it’s for this reason alone that you should schedule a service appointment sooner rather than later when your brakes are making a grinding noise.

Brakes Grinding When Stopping

There can be many instances where you hear your brakes making a grinding noise, but what about brakes grinding when stopping? This is a common issue for Kewaskum drivers but there can be a variety of different reasons fo the sound. Like:

  • If you hear the sound when stopping or slowing down, your brake pads are probably the culprit. But over time, brake pads lose their thickness and start to make a squealing noise—known as “brake scrubbing.” As the pads wear down further, you’ll hear a grinding noise instead.
  • If you hear a sharper grinding noise, it could be the sound of your brake disc and calipers. This may also cause a rumble in your pedal. This may require a brake pad replacement, but also disc or rotor replacement.
  • If you hear brakes grinding when stopping at full force, it could be your Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Your ABS will activate if you apply the full brakes, and it may even cause vibrations in the pedal.

Brakes Grinding When Driving

Similarly, if you’re asking yourself, “Why are my brakes grinding while driving?” it’s important to bring your vehicle into our service center as soon as possible. Brakes grinding when driving could be the result of debris in your vehicle’s braking system, and it’s best to have that debris removed before it causes more costly damage.
